Susie has been at Parkland for 32 years. Since I've been here for 2.5 years, she has really taken me in under her wing and helped me develop leadership skills and nursing skills by example. Anytime I had a question she was there to help me, anytime I had a difficult patient she was there by my side to help assist me. No one deserves this award more than her. She exemplifies everything that a Parkland Nurse should be, and I am so proud to have her by my side as a peer. She is one of the most compassionate people I know and would help anyone in need. She has been committed to Parkland for 32 years and even though our work environment isn't always the easiest, she has stood by through many changes and continues to make Parkland a better place. I am so blessed to be working by her side and am so grateful for the compassion she has shown towards me personally- especially when I was in a time of need. ... Susie not only provides compassion to her patients, but also to her fellow staff members. Last October, I stress fractured my femur. Susie knew that my family lives in Oklahoma and I was on my own on crutches. She offered repetitively to take me in and let me stay in her guest room and cook for me with her family. She also called me constantly to check in on me and make sure I was okay. I was so grateful for her compassion. She always has a great attitude towards all. She's not only a caring nurse, but a caring person. She exemplifies the spirit of love, empathy and concern. ... Susie works very hard to make sure that all of her patients are safe and satisfied. Her patients are always very happy and smiling. She works honestly and transparently. Susie has been here for 32 years and yet is so humble and always teaching new nursing students, employees, and even the medical residents. She treats the medical residents that are learning so nicely and respectfully, and she says she hopes that the medical staff where her children work treat, them the same way. She never misses an opportunity to share her knowledge and never makes anyone feel degraded for asking for help or asking questions. ... Susie is absolutely a great charge nurse. She always does what is fair for assignments, she never favors a particular staff member, and she always does what's best for the unit. She always handles challenges with staffing respectfully. I've never seen her be rude to anyone and she always has a smile on her face when she comes to work. She is well respected by all of her peers and gets along with everyone. ... Susie is always a team player on our floor. If someone has a critical patient, she is always in the room assisting in some way to make sure that patient is transferred safely or stabilized on our unit. She is always checking on other staff members to make sure that they are okay or if they need assistance. She always respectfully brings information to the doctor's attention and works to make sure the patients have the correct orders to make sure our patients are safe. She questions things that worry her but does so in a respectful way. I've learned a lot from the way she speaks to coworkers. ... Susie is one of my favorite leaders on my unit because she always works hard and does what's best for our unit, employees and patients regardless of the recognition she receives. A few weeks ago a nurse didn't want to take a patient on magnesium sulfate because she had too many patients. Susie volunteered to take the patient as well as her 5 other patients. She never complained, she just made sure all of her patients were taken care of and safe. She always does what's best for Parkland. Susie is also a SuperUser and Validator for staff. ... Susie is constantly recognized by staff members for doing a job well done and lending a helping hand. I always see staff members writing comment cards recognizing her as a caring excellent nurse. Susie is always providing excellent care to our patients at Parkland, and all of their guests. She makes them feel valued and like they are a part of her family. She is very knowledgeable by experience, and is also certified in Maternal Newborn Nursing. She is so caring and empathetic with her patients as well as incredibly knowledgeable to make sure our patients are treated with the highest standards of service and performance. ... Susie always makes sure to follow the rules regarding staffing to ensure we are operating within budget. She always charges patients for supplies she uses on them and always is responsible with resources. Susie is deserving of the DAISY award as she has been a nurse for 32 years of service at Parkland Hospital, she is an amazing charge nurse and she is also certified in Maternal Newborn Nursing. She is a strong leader, has a great attitude, is a team player and an excellent role model.
