... Andrea Bonner is an exceptional individual and a primary example of all that Christiana Health Care strives to be and then some. I have been treated in the ED Observation Unit (formerly the CDU) for several years now, mostly on a weekly basis, though occasionally twice a week. Andrea has always been extraordinarily welcoming and comforting, both to me and to my family and the friends who have accompanied me on treatment days. The treatment board is filled with helpful information (what the treatment includes, my nurse's name and the tech for the day); additionally, Andrea includes a little drawing or words of encouragement that encapsulate an extra touch of comfort. Sometimes the drawings are simply the sun with its brilliant rays; sometimes the drawings are holiday inspired or seasonally themed. Regardless, Andrea's drawings let me know that she knows that my medical situation is serious, yet there is still joy to be found in living hard. I am grateful for the happiness she creates and the way it impacts those around her, including me and my family.

Oftentimes, Andrea brings in tea for my family and friends. She prepares special cups for them and lets them know that their comfort and questions matter. We are grateful for her diligence in reviewing my medical orders, her tenacity when the orders need clarification, and her gentle humor and compassion as we go through treatment over and over again. I have witnessed Andrea handle patients yelling at her with a gentle understanding; she knows that patients in pain sometimes are not quite themselves. I have observed Andrea handle impatient doctors with dignity and courage; she acknowledges that policies are in place for a purpose, and she is there to assist in implementation while attending to patients. I have experienced first-hand her helpful hands when I need a little assistance and her compassionate empathy when I am too weak to pull up the covers. She has provided remarkable leadership within the unit, resulting in a care team that functions with nursing expertise, unparalleled integrity, patient and family inclusivity, deep compassion, inspired conversation, and gentle humor.

I have been treated at two other hospitals, both top-rated in the world. Yet, I tell everyone who will listen that Christiana Care is much better. Andrea Bonner is one reason why this is so.
