I lost my mother today. She was a U.S. Army Nurse during Vietnam. She was admitted to the Hospice Palliative Care Unit a week ago. It was a very difficult decision to admit her rather than have her stay at home during her final hours. Our family agonized over her decision. We wanted her to come home in order to spend time with her children and pets.
I write this note not to recognize my mother, she served her country loyally, but rather, to recognize your Palliative Group and your wonderful group of hard working nurses. I spent most of the entire week on your floor as we waited on mom's journey. So many doctors and nurses were supportive during this time. They became a second family of sorts, so Thank You!
Two particular nurses were helpful. Mandy Thompson cared for my mom during the day. She talked to mom on a regular basis as though she knew her personally. And, she gave a hug or two when necessary to those family members who needed it at such a painful time. She went beyond just doing a job. She has a kind heart and caring soul and is a very good asset to your group.
Similarly, John Edmonds was like a big brother of sorts. He listened to our concerns and explained the current situation and what to look toward in the very near future. He was very supportive and quite funny as well. It is what makes him unique.
I want to thank your hospital again for assisting my mother in her time of need. Your Nursing Group is a hard working group who deserves recognition. I want to thank John and Mandy in particular. You exemplify what is good within your team and I appreciate it very much.
