Recently, a 79-year-old man with a history of relapsed CLL was admitted to KICU under our service for severe hypovolemia, AKI, and possible sepsis. He and his family expressed that he was tired and was sick of being in the hospital. Allie advocated for the patient and was able to have a hospice care group to evaluate the patient. The patient was approved for home hospice but the hospital bed could not be delivered to the patient's home until the following day. The family expressed that he still wanted to be home and only needed help physically transferring the patient to his bed from the car. Allie arranged for local firemen to meet the patient and his family after discharge and transfer the patient to his own bed. Allie also arranged for the firemen to return the next day, when the hospital bed was delivered, to transfer the patient to the hospital bed where then he could be more comfortable. Allie advocates for all of her patients but this was an example of her going beyond the call of duty. Allie understood the wishes of the patient and also the care needed and that a hospital bed would be comfortable for the patient as well as his family.
She understood that the patient would also be able to keep his dignity as he transitioned into hospice care with this hospital bed. Allie continues to place her patient's needs, desires, and care plans as her highest priority.
