It was Kalena's knowledge of how pain works that helped me understand not only what was happening but that it is necessary to use pain medications to help release the tension and anxieties.
I was admitted to the Unit from the ER, experiencing incredibly painful renal colic. I was immediately impressed by all of the nursing staff but especially Kalena. I spoke with her and discovered that she is a third-generation nurse. She felt that she was meant to be a nurse. It was interesting to hear but as I watched Kalena in action, I was able to witness that yes, she was meant to be a nurse and a very good one at that. My pain had been so difficult to manage and I had already been in the ER a few days earlier. The pain was managed with constant injections of narcotic but it was Kalena's knowledge of how pain works that helped me understand not only what was happening but that it is necessary to use pain medications to help release the tension and anxieties that were undoubtedly hindering my ability to pass the kidney stone. I felt that each time I discussed a medicine with Kalena, she was able to explain it to me and that she listened to how I felt about taking it. No matter how busy her day, Kalena tended to my needs and those of her other patients with a smile and diligence. She actually didn't get lunch until very late that day but never let her own sacrifice interfere with her ability to provide top-notch nursing care. I feel very fortunate that Kalena was my nurse.
