The Veteran had a successful thrombectomy that only left him with a minor speech deficit which has since resolved. Without Brenda's persistence, this story may not have had such a happy ending.
Commitment and Advocacy are ICARE principles Brenda displayed while caring for one of our Veterans. Brenda made a post-call to a Veteran the day after he had two GI procedures. The Veteran appeared to be very confused on the phone, he didn't remember having the procedures or any of his discharge instructions. Brenda felt something was off and wanted to know the patient's baseline cognitive function. This all happened on a Friday afternoon after the nurses who cared for this Veteran had left. Brenda tried calling the patient's son, but the listed phone number was disconnected. Brenda then called the patient's PCP but she was with another patient. Brenda was relentless, she felt very uneasy with the entire situation and called the PCP's nurse to ask about the patient's baseline cognition. After Brenda's call, the nurse interrupted the physician and the decision was made to call the local police department to request a welfare check on the Veteran. An ambulance transported the Veteran to a local tertiary hospital who transferred him to a certified stroke center. The Veteran had a successful thrombectomy that only left him with a minor speech deficit which has since resolved. Without Brenda's persistence, this story may not have had such a happy ending. Brenda is a very conscientious RN and is very dedicated to serving our Veterans. She is a true asset to our GI Department.
