Words cannot begin to describe how blessed 6 West is to have a manager like Julie Niagara. In all my years of nursing, I have never known a manager who simply just exudes such an inspiring transformational leadership style as she does. Most managers see a call light and start timing how long it takes an RN to respond to it. Some might even answer the call light themselves and then go find the primary RN to help the patient, but our manager, Julie will go above and beyond and without hesitation assist the patient with whatever it is they need. Her dedication and devotion to the patients on 6 West is unlike any other. Nine times out of ten if she isn't in her office or in a meeting you will find her on the unit helping the patients and nurses or relieving her staff for breaks. She is by far an exemplary leader and role model.
It is so refreshing to have a manager who sincerely cares and takes the time to get to know you as an individual. She is loving, compassionate, and kind and her genuine concern for the needs of others has won the respect, loyalty, and support of our unit.
On a continuous basis, Julie advocates not only for the needs of our patients but also for the needs of our staff. From day one, she has encouraged our involvement in projects, committees, and meetings that make decisions that directly impact our workflow. She challenges us to be active participants in problem-solving and inspires us to be innovative and creative while offering her guidance and support every step of the way. Her passion for nursing is contagious and it has given us not only the courage but strength to speak up whenever we have ideas or concerns about our work and environment. She is a firm believer in nurturing professional growth and believes everyone can be a leader and we believe in her and her vision for our unit. Julie is a true inspiration and I am certain if you were to observe her for just one day, you would without a doubt agree our unit is truly blessed.
