On a very busy evening shift, I was consulted to put in a dialysis catheter for a patient with acute renal failure who required emergent dialysis. Due to some communication issues, there was a delay in my receiving relevant information on the patient.
From the moment James became involved, every problem was solved and every roadblock to care was promptly removed. The patient was on blood-thinning medication he managed to have blood drawn for coagulation studies and results back by the time I could drive to the hospital. I had asked for certain equipment to be available--it was there along with a backup set, just in case.
In addition, James had designated a nurse to help with the procedure, who was ready and waiting and had thought to ask if a new nurse could be present to learn. He personally kept an eye and ear on our progress and had the order in the computer for her STAT portable erect chest X-ray, standard after this procedure, entered before I could get the function opened on the computer. This occurred against the background of several other acute patient issues which he was handling equally efficiently and with equanimity.
James deserves recognition for outstanding patient care, concern for his staff, and multitasking under pressure. If I am ever critically ill, I would be fortunate to have a nurse of this caliber running the show.
