Kendra Prince and Mary Feeling had been taking care of a patient who had been on the GISO Unit for 45 days. During this time, the patient had a handful of aggressive episodes and is autistic, which makes communication more challenging. He was placed in restraints or given medication to maintain medical devices, maintain safety for himself, and safety for staff. Mary reached out to her community sharing the patient's story, while maintaining HIPPA, and was fortunate to have a tablet donated to the patient. Since the tablet has been donated, there have been fewer or no aggressive behavior incidents. Mary has also donated clothes.
Kendra Prince has also gone above and beyond for the patient. She bought him clothes and hair clippers and gave him a haircut. She has also been able to de-escalate situations, so the patient does not become aggressive. She has educated the rest of the staff on how to de-escalate situations as well.
These two nurses are great, and I am proud to call them my co-workers. They did these things without being asked.
They both have embodied UAB's vision of "Always Care".
