The definition of nursing that I found is the care of individuals, families, and communities. So they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life. I have worked alongside Paula Shumpert for approximately 30 years. She is one of the most patient and caring nurses I know. Her level of dedication to caring for our patients is immeasurable. She prides herself on being the best patient advocate she can be. Her determination has helped many patients. I have seen her make many phone calls, complete numerous forms, and engage in an appeal process to help a patient get the required medication. She has provided countless coupons to assist parents in making treatment affordable. She has assured numerous new moms in caring for their new babies. She treats each triage call with the same level of attention and care. She has educated countless parents on feeding, medication dosing, and advice, asthma care, newborn care, immunization counseling - just to name a few. I have been asked by many moms during rooming if they can meet Paula so that they can put a face to a name and to thank her for all of her advice and guidance. I have learned a lot from Paula over the years. I am thankful to be her colleague.
