Taylor anticipated the family's needs, fielded their questions, and made sure this patient was comfortable in her final moments of life.
Taylor was actually nominated twice this month, but the following is her selected nomination:
"As chaplain, it is my honor to observe our clinical teams in action throughout the hospital. It would be remiss of me if I did not share at least one instance where I observed and experienced Taylor, a registered nurse in ICU going above and beyond to provide compassionate care. Taylor is proactive in contacting the chaplain's office when a patient or their family needs spiritual and/or emotional support. I consider it a privilege to work alongside Taylor and would not hesitate to have her care for any member of family.
A couple of short weeks ago Taylor was caring for a critically patient in the ICU. This patient came to AdventHealth Shawnee Mission through the ED and unfortunately, she coded twice in the ED and again on admission to the ICU. The medical team did all that was humanly possible to care for this patient with the hope of restoring her to her family.
Sadly, the prognosis was not good the patient was diagnosed as being brain dead. Her grieving heartbroken husband had to make the loving but painful decision to withdraw medical intervention and place his wife on comfort care. Taylor contacted the chaplain to assist in supporting this family. She briefed me on the patient's prognosis and introduced me to the patient's husband and mother.
Taylor so was so very compassionate. She made sure that the room was clean, and the patient was readied for the arrival of the priest to administer the Sacrament of the sick and for the patient's two teenage daughters to say their final goodbyes to their mom. I noticed tears in Taylor's eyes. I witnessed Taylor care for her patient as if she was caring for her mother or as she would a member of my own family. She was ever so gentle, patient, empathetic with the patient's husband, two daughters, and mother.
I observed how she patiently explained what to expect as the medical equipment was discontinued. Taylor anticipated the family's needs, fielded their questions, and made sure this patient was comfortable in her final moments of life. Taylor journeyed with this family in the depths of their emotional trauma. She could not have changed the outcome, but they left AdventHealth Shawnee Mission knowing that their precious love one received the best care possible. I could list a couple of other occasions where I experienced Taylor living out our service standard "Love Me."
