Luis was the face I remember, not only from that morning but for the next couple of days as well, giving me all the attention I could ask for, encouraging me as the treatments and ultimately my system began to respond.
I'm being treated for SLL and my second chemo infusion was a bad trip. 104 fever sent me to the ER at about 10 pm and to ICU a few hours later with fever, heart issues, very low blood pressure, and very weak hemoglobin, white cell, and platelet levels. Before I knew it, I was hooked up to multiple IVs with the doctor indicating that most people would have died from multiple organ failure given my weak vitals. Luis was the face I remember, not only from that morning but for the next couple of days as well, giving me all the attention I could ask for, encouraging me as the treatments and ultimately my system began to respond. He became a trusted friend, guiding me through an unexpected and scary few days. He made multiple calls to my wife as well who was pretty traumatized by the situation, not allowed in to see me and alone. Neither of us will forget his dedication and professionalism in our time of need.
By the way, I spent 8 days in MJH total, including stints in cardio and oncology, and had uniformly great care from all my nurses and doctors. Luis was my first however and gave me the momentum to make it through the full experience.
Note: This is Luis's 3rd DAISY Award!
