Jaime offered to cut his hair for him, and he had one special request – fried chicken! During her lunch break, Jaime went to buy this patient fried chicken and she had lunch with him in his hospital room.
Recently, the MICU nurses cared for a patient over several months after he suffered a cardiac arrest and was subsequently discharged to LTAC with a new tracheotomy. As you can imagine, this patient in his late 30's went into a state of depression. To try and cheer him up, Jaime would often visit him while she was in charge to brighten his spirits. Fast forward to months later, Jaime found out that this patient was back in the hospital on a med-surg floor. Taking time out of her day, she went to see him and to her surprise, he was decannulated, walking, and back in good spirits. She offered to cut his hair for him, and he had one special request - fried chicken! During her lunch break, Jaime went to buy this patient fried chicken and she had lunch with him in his hospital room. They reminisced on his time here in the ICU and how far he had come. We, as ICU nurses, don't often get to hear the great stories that follow once a patient discharges or leaves the ICU. Jaime exemplifies compassionate nursing care and even when we don't always have time, Jaime found time to go above and beyond for this patient.
