Brittney came and visited me and asked how I was doing prior to coming back on shift. Very thoughtful and compassionate on her part to say the least and definitely made me feel that I was a person she provided care to and not just another patient.
I was brought to MCR and was treated in the emergency department for trauma to my right side sustained from a fall from a ladder/roof. I want to provide some of my thoughts, personal experience with your outstanding staff, and my recall of one of your team members who stood out. This team member is Brittney McCoy, one of your RNs. She consistently displayed an intense enthusiasm and desire to provide a compassionate, pragmatic, and highly skilled level of care for me following my traumatic injury while in the emergency department. This was coupled with an innate ability to clearly communicate about my care and treatment plan set forth by the attending physician and physician's assistant. She displayed her enthusiasm for her job by consistently checking on me; regardless of the fact that I never utilized the call button while remaining in the emergency department for more than a 48-hour period due to limited bed space elsewhere in the hospital. Her sound ability to communicate was evidenced by her willingness to sit down and look at my electronic chart and answer numerous questions I had about the extent of my injuries, treatment plan, and pain management coupled with my allergy to opioids.
She displayed a passion for her work and role as a care provider in your facility. Her passion was evident in the fact that even though I had been moved from the emergency department to one of the non-COVID-19 areas in the hospital she came and visited me and asked how I was doing prior to coming back on shift in the emergency department. Very thoughtful and compassionate on her part to say the least and definitely made me feel that I was a person she provided care to and not just another patient. This is a great example of someone that does more than just medicine and relates to the people they provide care to while in the hospital.
Her encouragement, knowledge about the benefits that rehabilitative continued care would provide, and numerous discussions with me about such was a major factor in my decision-making process to decide that the best course of action was to be transferred to Poudre Valley Hospital for intensive inpatient rehabilitation instead of being discharged to go home. My recovery from my trauma-induced injuries has been rapid and remarkable and I credit this to the exceptional initial assessment of the trauma team, the positive attitude and outlook I maintain, and most importantly the competent, sincere, and compassionate nursing staff; specifically, Brittany.
It is my sincere hope that there are more nurses like Brittney that work in your facility because they certainly spend the most time with patients and are the lynchpin to a positive experience. I do not think anyone awakens and says, "I think I'll plan on going to the emergency room today". I know I certainly did not start my workday with that thought. In retrospect though, I do not think there is a better facility in all of Colorado for being treated for trauma than Medical Center of the Rockies. I am very grateful for the amazing care I received in your facility!
