The one thing I thought I could do was not going well. Shaina, my nurse, came in and literally just let me cry on her for 30 minutes.
I was upset because I had an emergency C-section alone, without my husband because he had to stay home with my other three kids (my two-year-old had surgery three weeks prior). I was sad even more because my baby was almost eight weeks early, so he would have a NICU stay.
When I got to the mother & baby floor, it was time to pump, so I could give my baby the best chance he had in the NICU. I was having trouble getting my milk to come in and trouble pumping, as this was my first child I was going to breastfeed. I got so frustrated and I kept crying because there was just so much going on. The one thing I thought I could do was not going well.
Shaina, my nurse, came in and literally just let me cry on her for 30 minutes. A few hours later, she came back into my room and I found out she had taken time on her lunch break to buy me drinks she said might help with my breastmilk production. They worked!
I had her again the next night as a nurse and she checked on me and was just simply there to talk to me and give me company since I was alone. She made sure I had everything I needed, including a friend. Not once did I feel like I was just simply another patient and she was the nurse. This was my last child and I wanted my last experience to be amazing, and even though my baby was super early in the NICU and I had a C-section, it WAS amazing...because of her!
I cannot thank her enough for all the kindness and compassion she showed me during my stay at the hospital. She truly is one of the most amazing nurses I have ever met!
