Addi stayed and listened to my concerns. I felt so validated when she began giving me a pep talk and started explaining to me how I was the patient and that I should absolutely speak up and advocate for myself.
Anxiety is something I cope with on a daily basis. So, when I was hospitalized unexpectedly, being in a new environment around unfamiliar people, put me on edge. I didn't feel confident when talking to the doctors and nurses. I was afraid to be a bother. Addi completely changed that. After I left the ER and was hospitalized, a doctor came to discuss my case with me. I didn't feel that he and I were on the same page when it came to my plan of care. I was scared to speak up so I just listened quietly. After he left, my anxiety presented itself. My heart rate increased, I felt clammy, and I wanted to cry. For a moment, I beat myself up about over-reacting and told myself I was being stupid. I was alone and felt cut off from the world. Even though I didn't want to bother anyone, I pressed my call button and waited. When someone came over the speaker, all I could think to say was "I need to talk to my nurse". Addi came in with another young lady immediately and asked what I needed. I broke down and just let it all out. I told her how the doctor had upset me and that I didn't know how to talk to him. She stayed and listened to my concerns. I felt so validated when she began giving me a pep talk and started explaining to me how I was the patient and that I should absolutely speak up and advocate for myself. My feelings were validated and I began to settle down. From then on, I felt more comfortable interacting with everyone. Addi and I became quick friends, and I have enjoyed her company immensely. I loved chatting with her about her experiences in Ethiopia. When I was set to be discharged, we said a heartfelt goodbye and I will genuinely miss her. Any patient is lucky to have her as a nurse. She's not only skilled, but she has a good heart.
