Recently, we have had a patient on the inpatient behavioral health unit who was having multiple difficulties. The patient has intellectual disabilities and requires a lot of extra support. The patient can be aggressive and violent at times which is understandable considering the unfamiliar faces, environment, and unit safety rules. Larry immediately developed a great rapport with this patient. He has taken extra time with them, walking the halls of the unit, playing cards, talking, and just offering a calm demeanor and caring listening ear. The patient responds very well to Larry and has had more than two days of much calmer and cooperative interactions with all staff. Larry has even taken the time to attend special meetings for the patient and contributed information that may not have been shared with other staff that our patient was not as comfortable with. Larry is a phenomenal psychiatric nurse and a shining example of demonstrating care and compassion to an often misunderstood population of patients. I admire and respect Larry for his patience, care, compassion, and insight he has shown during this hospitalization for our patient. Thank you Larry and may you continue to be a shining example to all nurses and staff! I so appreciate all that you do.
