Jake worked tirelessly to make sure the patient got the best care possible.
It is often forgotten that HOAs are nurses who are there to support the bedside nurses, patients, and family members. Jake was able to positively impact the care of a 16-year-old patient who was emergently transferred from Lurie Children's Hospital for a cardiac catheterization procedure at 3 am. When I met the patient and the patient's mom, I also met Jake. After assessing the patient who would need pediatric care, Jake trekked to get a pediatric crash cart when the pharmacist was busy with an arrest. I am not a PALS certified nurse, so Jake acted as the resource for the cath lab nurses as a PALS clinician. With Jake there supporting us, we were able to focus on the procedure and take care of the patient effectively; always knowing, should the need arise, Jake could take care of the pediatric patient. Jake was also very much in touch with the patient's mom to help calm and support her. He was somehow able to be omnipresent! Thankfully, the patient did not need a stent and it was deemed he would be better cared for by the team at Lurie. Story over, right? No.
At 5 am, the next problem arose when the pediatric transport team was out in the suburbs and wouldn't be back until 7 am. Meaning the patient would be admitted to the ICU for only 2 hours until transferred. Jake worked tirelessly to make sure the patient got the best care possible. Jake called various people, making sure we could legally transport him ourselves over to Lurie. He accompanied us to Lurie with the patient, making sure everyone was safe, healthy, and not lost.
Throughout this whole ordeal, Jake always had good spirits and a smile on his face. I never once felt that we were a burden to him.
You can tell he loves what he does and that he is very good at it. By caring for us, we were able to give the patient excellent care to the best of our abilities and safely transfer him to a facility that specialized in his age group. Let us never forget, no matter how many degrees and certifications we get as we progress through our profession, the one that matters most and is closest to our hearts- the RN. Nurses never stop caring for patients regardless of the role they play and Jake is a shining example of this.
