Sherry did not feel comfortable letting the patient walk back to the mission by himself. Sherry called for an Uber driver to take the patient to the mission.
One of our patients needed to come in every week for wound care treatment. On this particularly hot summer day, he arrived for his appointment and his blood pressure was elevated. The medical provider asked Sherry to call for a non-emergent transport to the hospital. It was an extremely busy day for EMS and the patient ended up waiting a little longer than expected. Sherry was asked by several people if the patient could wait in the lobby until transport arrived. She was adamant that the patient remain in the room and stay on the gurney until help arrived. She felt it was in the best interest of the patient to not be moved around and better for his overall well-being. She kept a strict eye on him to be sure he remained lying down. The provider continued to check the patient's blood pressure and it did drop to normal levels. Sherry knew the patient was staying at the Rescue Mission and although the medical provider decided the patient did not need to go to the Emergency Room, Sherry did not feel comfortable letting the patient walk back to the mission by himself. Sherry called for an Uber driver to take the patient to the mission. She did this on her own personal phone and at her own expense. She assisted the patient to the parking area and waited with him until the Uber driver arrived.
Sherry is well known for going out of her way to do things like this for our patients. She has bought clothes and personal supplies for patients and brought in dog biscuits for their pets. We simply could not let this generous act of kindness go by without acknowledging how much we love Sherry and her genuine compassion for others.
