When she contacted me to let me know the good news, Kaisha offered to bring it to us on her way home.
My husband became very weak last Saturday, unable to stand up alone due to weakness in his quads. He had not felt well earlier in the week but seemed to be doing better. However, he also has had recurring pneumonia for several years, and it had flared up on Friday. He eventually agreed to call 911.
We chose MUSC because his amazing pulmonologist Dr. H and his wonderful endocrinologist Dr. P are there. The ER staff were all kind, caring, efficient listeners and caregivers. He was transferred to the "rule-out" floor for COVID-19 testing because of his risk factors. When the test results came back negative, he was transferred to the 5th floor. The nurses and techs on both floors were wonderful, as well.
His first nurse on 5 was Kaisha Giles. She remembered him (and us) from a previous hospitalization. She was kind and efficient and always had a smile on her face, no matter how stressful her shift was. When she came back to work after a day off (and wasn't assigned to my husband's room), she came by to say hello and to check on us.
When he was discharged (yay!), I was very careful packing up everything. However, several hours after we got home, I discovered we didn't have his glucometer. That is a huge issue since he is a brittle diabetic. I called the 5th floor and spoke with Kaisha. She went back to his room and checked thoroughly (the bed, the closet, the bathroom, the drawers) but was unable to find it. Later, when she finished taking care of her patients and had a spare moment, she continued to search and found it in the security area.
When she contacted me to let me know the good news, Kaisha offered to bring it to us on her way home. I offered to meet her somewhere, but she insisted that our house was not of her way. All of this took place with kindness, a caring attitude, and that same smile. MUSC should be proud Kaisha Giles chooses to serve others in their Florence campus.
