Cassandra Steel was nominated by a clinical instructor. Cassandra is a motivated nursing student who provided outstanding, empathetic, quality care to her clients in N102. Cassandra was assigned to an older gentleman who was paralyzed below the waist. Cassandra was told that this client was not receptive to nursing care, refused his bath, and dressing changes. Cassandra, however, did not accept that report and was determined to provide care. Cassandra explained her role for the day and the client allowed her to perform care. Cassandra engaged the client throughout the bath and dressing changes, seeking his collaboration in provision of care. The client indicated that the dressings had not been changed since his admission several days earlier. Cassandra reviewed the chart and reached out to the nurse to identify the necessary supplies and gathered them all. The client 's wounds were large and deep, with a significant amount of malodorous drainage requiring a great deal of time to clean and dress appropriately. Cassandra was patient with the client, kept him informed of what was occurring, and provided him frequent rest periods throughout the dressing changes. After completing care, Cassandra ensured that all supplies were refreshed and reviewed the dressing change and her assessment findings with the nurse. She also recommended that the wound care team be consulted. The next day, Cassandra cared for this same client. He again permitted her to provide care and change the dressings. Within 24 hours, the wounds showed marked improvement and the time to perform the dressing changes was cut almost in half. The client did express his gratitude for the time Cassandra spent with him, stating that "it was nice to have someone that actually cared to help." Cassandra is worthy of this DAISY-In-Training nomination. Cassandra provided excellent care to all of the clients she was assigned to during this rotation. This situation stood out because this client needed a caregiver and an advocate and Cassandra stepped right up to this challenge. For those two clinical days, Cassandra made a difference for this client.
