I have had the opportunity to have this student in the N361 clinical and the N371 class and clinical beginning in the spring of 2016. During this time, this student displayed not only exceptional clinical and academic skills, but demonstrated compassion for patients and their families. A particular instance that stands out among many was the care that she provided during her clinical experience in N361. This particular patient was very ill and the way in which she cared for him displayed excellent caring. She was gentle and spoke to him throughout his assessment and cared in a very calm way which provided him with much dignity and respect. She allowed him to utilize what independence he had and conversed with him and he shared with her that he was very tired and aware of his mortality. As the day progressed, the patient became more ill and was not as responsive as he was that morning. A large number of members from the medical team came to the patient room and spoke to his wife about the end of life and did not once attempt to speak to him as if he were even present. This student was very bothered by this and immediately advocated for this patient by walking up toward the head of the bed and said Mr. _, the physicians are here and discussing your care. He made an effort to open his eyes and look around. The medical staff continues talking to the wife and minimally included him. This student stayed with him the entire time they were there at the patient 's side. When the team left, she asked the patient and his wife if she could get a chaplain/ call anyone or any way in which she could help. The wife cried and held her hand. She stayed and was a terrific listener to this grieving wife and also a tremendous asset to the very busy nursing staff as this was something that the primary nurse was unable to participate in during this time as other patients were requiring her attention. The nurses on 6C were very impressed with this student and the wife was so thankful to her caring behaviors as well. She also took care of a complex patient who had suffered multiple shot wounds and had involvement with gang activity. She provided care in a professional manner, which provided the patient with dignity and respect. The patient was somewhat difficult but she had managed to obtain compliance. There is not enough room to describe the many more ways in which this student is an exceptional student nurse and she will be an excellent nurse in the future. She is an exceptional candidate to receive a DAISY-In Training Award as she truly possesses the "healers touch" in her care to patients.
