LTC Tommy L. Thompson, DNP, FNP is an officer in the U.S. Army and a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing (GSN), assigned to Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA. LTC Thompson has skillfully balanced his university-related responsibilities with that of his duty to the hospital, currently serving as the Interim Chief of Madigan Consolidated Education Division, where he manages 49 military and civilian employees who collectively oversee approximately 250 students.
In addition to seeing patients across five various clinics on the installation, LTC Thompson has continually gone above and beyond for his students and the GSN in his role as the Phase II Site Director.
He always makes himself available to students who need additional help with assignments or complex clinical cases, and frequently receives positive feedback from students on his teaching style and professional guidance.
He volunteered to formally mentor two new GSN Faculty serving as site directors and has informally mentored and assisted many others, providing guidance on the site director role, securing clinical placements, and responsibilities as DNP project advisor to students, and how to address student conflicts and concerns appropriately.
LTC Thompson has assisted a total of 12 students with their DNP projects in two years, providing numerous hours of mentoring, verbal and written feedback on theses, and ensuring IRB requirements, coursework deadlines, and graduation requirements are met.
LTC Thompson's dedication has enriched the educational experiences of countless students and practitioners and serves as an exemplar of what it means to be an Army nurse and officer.
