Since the start of the Nursing Program in September, Swathilakshmi Tavarekare (Sue) has shown a true commitment to academic excellence. She is always searching for clarification of concepts and has demonstrated intellectual curiosity in all subject matter. This semester, I witnessed a different side of Sue.
As her clinical instructor, I have been able to observe, the impact she has in providing compassionate care to her patients. Her first clinical assignment ended up being more of an interpersonal challenge as opposed to a medical challenge. The patient was recently diagnosed with a mental illness. Sue provided exceptional and compassionate care to the patient even though she faced many barriers. Performing dressing changes and physical care required an inordinate amount of patience. Sue's calm voice, constant reassuring, and caring attitude made a major impact on the care the patient received. She also had assistance from her classmates, which she promptly expressed appreciation for.
Throughout the semester, similar situations like this would occur during clinical. Sue consistently spoke to her patients with kindness and sensitivity, despite the challenges she may have encountered. She was acknowledged by the nursing staff regarding the help she offers to others and her consideration to all.
Lastly, Sue consistently arrives to clinical with a bright smile and a kind demeanor no matter what is going on in her life.
