Our DAISY Award for Nursing Students goes to Tony Jordan who excelled in the Medical-Surgical rotation and was complimented by the staff that worked there. It was said this recipient was compassionate, insightful and able to bond with the patients. Further, while on a medical unit in clinical, this student noticed a patient that had lung sounds that caused concern. This student not only advocated for the patient but took it upon themselves to teach the patient the simplest of things, how to use his incentive spirometer. Throughout the day this student returned to the patient room and assured the patient's use of the device. By the end of the day, his lung sounds improved, his oxygen level improved and we were able to reduce his supplemental oxygen requirement. The patient later commented that without this student's tutelage, he would not be able to breathe and didn't think he would be closer to recovery and going home. This student is a person that is soft spoken but excels in all areas of the clinical realm. Instructors rely on him in clinical and he is always willing to assist his peers.
