I met Genevieve in Med-Surg a year ago. She and I have had a majority of our clinical rotations together and I have been honored to watch Genevieve grow into a compassionate and caring nurse. She has always shown exception in the care she provides for her patients but there is one particular day in our critical care rotation that will always stand out in my mind. Genevieve and I got on the floor that morning at 7 am to take bedside report with our nurses, and like always after report we grab our computers look up our patient information, medications, and check on each other to make sure we are OK and make sure if either of us needs help, to seek each other out; out motto is team work is dream work. Our patient rooms happened to be near each other that day and every time I walked out of mine she was walking into hers. We finally got a moment to sit down and chart, and catch up on how our day is going. Genevieve told me she had a twenty six year old woman with stage 4 bone cancer and two stage 4 pressure ulcers on her sacrum. The young lady was alert and intubated but communicated through blinking. Genevieve made sure the young lady remained comfortable and always explained the care she was providing to her before it was performed. Genevieve went above just providing comfort measure, she questioned why this young lady was only receiving minimum care for her cancer. For example, this young lady was not receiving any form of medication (not even for pain), and no form of nutrition. This young lady only received IV fluids and wound care. Genevieve's assigned nurse told her that this is the only care the father wanted to be performed because he was treating her ayurvedically. I watched Genevieve care for this young lady all day. She checked on her hourly and at times I would see Genevieve standing next to the bed talking with her because for a majority of the day this young lady was alone. Although the communication was limited verbally Genevieve's presence and care that day spoke volumes.
