Alyssa is deserving of this award due to what I observed while on the cross-cultural trip with her and fellow students. Alyssa demonstrated compassion to the degree I have not seen before. She did not hesitate to cultivate a connection with patients with whom she couldn't speak the language, but she would get down to their level and look in their eyes and hold their hand. While a patient was getting a painful procedure, Alyssa sang worship songs while keeping her gaze on his eyes. She reached out to children in the children's wards and built trust and respect with them by playing and making objects with gloves and allowing children to listen to their own heart. One parent exclaimed that she had never seen a nurse bend down to be at her child's eye level. Alyssa advocated for the infants on an infant unit to be picked up and held when they were crying, to be held during a feeding and burped after the feeding. She advocated for pain medicine for patients in pain. Alyssa portrays the personal values of caring and compassion, as spoken above. She exemplifies the value of faith with her strong convictions and ability to express her faith. She exemplifies the values of professionalism by having a strong knowledge base and using her critical thinking to make sound judgements. Lastly, she exemplifies the value of service leadership by being a servant in our team dynamics, by lending assistance, by being positive and flexible when needed.
