It is my great pleasure and honor to nominate my colleague Dr. Ruth Lindquist for the School of Nursing DAISY Faculty Award for the category of exceptional mentorship for 2011. I have known Dr. Lindquist for over a decade and know her advising and mentoring in nursing, commitment to the students and the University and creativity and inspiration in teaching to be exemplary. Dr. Lindquist served as advisor and later when I was a junior faculty, as a mentor. Without her guidance and mentoring, I could not have succeeded to receive the prestigious Hartford postdoctoral award, Graduate School Grant-in-Aid and MNRS inentorship award all in my first and second year as a junior faculty. As a clinical nurse specialist, following completion of my PhD degree, Dr. Lindquist helped me identify and develop my talents, and thus I changed career to academia. Reflecting on my decision to change career from clinical practice to teaching and research has been the right decision for me, because this is truly my passion. As a new faculty at the University of Minnesota, I have been blessed to have Dr. Lindquist's guidance and mentoring to help me navigate the academic world. Despite being very busy, she has always been so generous with her time and providing feedback to me. She helped me create a vision of my academic career trajectory and provided specific guidance and mentoring and helped me achieve my goals. In my second year of teaching at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Lindquist helped me develop my application for Hartford postdoctoral award. After receiving the award, she met with me a minimum of twice a month and as needed to help me with my questions regarding my pilot study. She guided 1ne through writing manuscripts every step of the way, painstakingly providing detailed feedback and gently pushing me forward through completion. As a result, I was able to publish two manuscripts from my PhD dissertation shortly after my graduation. Dr. Lindquist energy and effectiveness in teaching and mentoring is extraordinary and expand the impact of her work. She is known for her generous feedback and encouragement by spending considerable amount of tin1e and effort providing feedback and supporting development of students as well as colleagues. Four of her former graduate students whom she mentored have held national leadership positions as president in their national professional organizations including Drs. Avery, Treat-Jacobson, Sendelbach, and Tracy. I have heard accounts of students who were so inspired by Dr. Lindquist mentoring.. In her capacity as a mentor, she was instrumental in helping 1ne develop Interdisciplinary Research Team by connecting me with professionals in other disciplines and guiding me through the meetings. Without her mentoring, I would not have been able to complete my feasibility pilot study early in my career. This nomination letter provides only a few examples of Dr. Lindquist's contributions to Public service. I know of no other individual with such outstanding achievements, yet with so much modesty and generosity to students and colleagues.
