Ammaiyah demonstrated critical thinking skills, recall of needed interventions, acted promptly, and prevented the patient's demise.
Ammaiyah Todd was on her fifth clinical shift at the Medical Center of Aurora. She discovered a patient with agonal respirations, using accessory muscles and breathing shallowly. The patient had a permanent artificial airway and Ammaiyah discovered the oxygen supplement was not connected to the tracheotomy. Ammaiyah gathered up an ambu bag and began supporting the patient's respirations. She called her clinical faculty, who then triggered a Rapid Response and the Team arrived. Since the patient had a pulse, no chest compressions were offered. The patient survived the hypoxic event and was transferred to the critical care unit at her baseline clinical status. Ammaiyah demonstrated critical thinking skills, recall of needed interventions, acted promptly, and prevented the patient's demise. Her skills as a respiratory therapist allowed her to remain calm and focused during this clinical decline event. Ammaiyah also helped the on-duty team understand the connections needed for the oxygen supply. The clinical faculty was duly impressed with Ammiayah's skills and talents during emergency care. The faculty was pleased to have such a strong patient advocate among the Regis Student clinical group!
