On our last day of clinicals, Kayla Tanner, a Junior 1 student was at the nurse's station to review her patient's chart when she realized the patient had been discharged overnight. She also heard the nursing staff was very stressed because of a call-in of the PCT (patient care technician) so the nursing staff was going to be stretched thin. She came to me and asked if it would be possible for her to fill in for the staff in this role rather than have to hurry to find a new patient. I approved and commended her willingness to step forward. Kayla quickly began to work managing an entire hallway of the unit doing VS, accuchecks, bedbaths, feeding, changing, and answering call lights. She rallied with the rest of the clinical rotation to manage many of the patients on the unit that day and help the nursing staff when in a very difficult situation. The supervisor came and brought a gift of candy to the entire clinical group at the end of the day in deep appreciation for their assistance that day. They made me very proud.
