Ben demonstrated superior compassionate care to the most vulnerable of all patients - newborn babies. Ben very quickly demonstrated not just the expertise in performing a newborn physical and gestational age assessment, but the ability to involve the father and family members in the assessment and other aspects of newborn care. If a new mother was still unable to get out of bed (due to effects of an epidural), he advocated for family centered care values by engaging the father in the assessment and the first bath; teaching him how to bathe his baby, how to swaddle, etc. His gentleness and caring of the newborn did not go unnoticed as many parents commented on what an excellent job he did and how calming he was with their infant. The transition nurse commented that he was so proficient in his transition and assessment skills that he could work in the newborn nursery right now! His excellent nursing skills gained the trust of the transition nurses (and his instructor) such that he was able to teach his peers how to bathe a newborn and other aspects of newborn care. Ben also made a real connection with his patients - caring for them during labor, assisting them to push, and then completing the circle by caring for the baby with the family members. Ben was the epitome of a professional nurse in all aspects - his kind and caring manner, his compassion for his patients, and his ability to care for his patients in a non-judgmental manner will serve him well as he begins his career as an RN. He is very deserving of the DAISY-in-Training Award.
