There was laughter and singing coming from the room. My mother was freshly bathed and showered, dressed in a new gown, and sitting in a wheelchair with Anna drying off my Mother's hair.
Our Mother was admitted with severe leg pain due to an infection. She was not happy, depressed, and angry with not being unable to ambulate. She had a loss of her independence. She was not happy with family members. The next day, as I got close to her room, the curtain was drawn but polka tunes (my mother's favorite) were coming from her room. There was laughter and singing coming from the room. My mother was freshly bathed and showered, dressed in a new gown, and sitting in a wheelchair with Anna drying off my Mother's hair. Mom had a big smile on her face! When Anna stepped out, my Mom exclaimed how Anna got her all freshened up and what a great nurse she was. They had sung "You Are My Sunshine" in the shower and again later which had Mom laughing with glee. I could hardly believe the change in my Mother from the morning before.
On Friday, Mom walked a short distance with PT before she was tired. Over the weekend "our Anna" was able to get Mom to walk outside her room when PT was unavailable. Mom totally trusted Anna and was willing to cooperate. My brother stayed with my mother as well and mentioned how Anna was going above and beyond the call of duty. My brother and I smiled when watching Mom and Anna greet each other and sing "You Are My Sunshine" whenever Anna came into the room. Mom was going to be discharged the next day and Anna was going to be off. Right before the end of her shift, Anna came into Mom's room to say goodbye and sang to her as she left my Mom's room. We saw that Anna certainly puts her heart and soul into caring for her patients. She certainly fills the call to nursing. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
