Despite that it was a holiday and then the weekend, Lia worked to have the surgery, potential complications, and next steps explained to the patient via interpreter so that she could fully understand what was going to happen.
This patient had required ECMO support while being critically ill from COVID. She remained on 11 East as a patient for 9 months. Serving as the ECMO Specialist on the unit over Christmas, Lia became aware that the patient was going to have an extensive, potentially life-altering surgery on the Monday after Christmas. After the surgeons explained this to the patient it became apparent to Lia and the nursing staff that the patient did not fully comprehend the gravity of the upcoming surgery due to a language barrier. Despite that it was a holiday and then the weekend, Lia worked to have the surgery, potential complications, and next steps explained to the patient via interpreter so that she could fully understand what was going to happen. Lia also made sure to tell the patient to have her family bring any of her favorite foods that she would want to eat before surgery, as one of the potential outcomes could have been that the patient required long-term ventilator support. Finally, Lia arranged a visitor exception over the weekend for the patient's husband and children to visit with the patient before she had her surgery. While the patient had a regular visitor exception throughout her illness for her husband and one daughter, her other children hadn't visited with her in months, and her family had not all been together since before her admission to Rush in April 2020. Luckily, the surgery went well, and the patient was able to recover and eventually be discharged home. However, Lia's forethought and caring actions to advocate for the patient ensured that for whatever scenario transpired after surgery, the patient and her family were well-informed and able to see each other beforehand.
