Although the patient couldn't speak English, Toni sat with the patient in the lobby while he looked out the window at the sunset.
On Neuro, we had a patient who was complicated to care for. The patient spoke a specific dialect of Mandarin that our interpreter system was not able to assist with. We used the phone interpreter. The wife also stayed and spoke no English. The patient was confused and was pulling on his foley. The daughter was very upset and concerned he would hurt himself. Toni stepped in to help the patient and family and had the foley removed. The family wanted the patient up and out of bed. Toni took it upon herself to locate a wheelchair and take the patient around the hospital since he had been in his room for a week. Although the patient couldn't speak English, Toni sat with the patient in the lobby while he looked out the window at the sunset. The daughter commented on how thankful she was that someone took the time to bring her father out of the room and sit with him. Afterward, Toni also assisted with giving the patient a bath - again something his daughter was so grateful for.
