Despite having class the evening of my 5th cycle, Maddie made multiple calls to ensure she could be my RN for my final inpatient cycle.
I currently work as a clinical pharmacist at WellSpan York Hospital and found myself needing care from our oncology floor. Because of a previous reaction to chemotherapy, my first 5 cycles were scheduled for inpatient observation for desensitization. I met Maddie during my first cycle. She was assigned to me for 1:1 care all day. She was meticulous with chemotherapy second checks, keeping everything on schedule, and making a very long day go by as quickly as possible.
Unfortunately, my second cycle was delayed 2 days due to a lack of beds/staff on 7S. Maddie signed up for my third cycle which occurred in 5M outpatient infusion. This was arranged through the collaboration of the 7S RN manager and Dr. E to ensure the treatment was not delayed due to bed issues. A recent spike in COVID cases led to the closing of 5M infusion, so my 4th cycle was up in the air. Maddie had already signed up for my 4th cycle. My colleague, L, texted me and mentioned that Maddie was asking what the plan was for me the week before I was scheduled. K was covering as the 7S RN manager and he was able to reserve a bed for my chemo admission, which allowed me to have a time of arrival the night before. K came to visit me during my 4th cycle and, like a wonderful manager, managed up Maddie. She advocated for me to ensure this cycle went smoothly and there was no further delay.
Despite having class the evening of my 5th cycle, Maddie made multiple calls to ensure she could be my RN for my final inpatient cycle. As you can see, there are several names in this story. I am grateful to have such a wonderful team of nurses, physicians, and pharmacists taking care of me. Thanks so much.
