Today, I had a WONDERFUL experience with the nurse that I was working with, Ashley Lawrence. In regard to my educational experience, she challenged me, asking me questions about medications and my understanding of the patient's diagnosis; but when I had questions, she followed up with thorough education that helped stimulate my knowledge. During our "downtime", she took the time to educate me on heart rhythms, using her computer tabletop to draw out everything with detail, in a way that I could understand it and gain more knowledge about the rhythms. While clinicals are time for me and my peers to practice our skills and to learn patient care hands-on, I learned a lot more from Ashley today about holistic patient care, mainly focusing on other issues that the patient was going through that was impacting their lives. There was one patient in particular that Ashley went above and beyond to get the patient the support that they needed. The patient unexpectedly lost their partner within the last few days due to an accident at home, and the patient only learned about the death the night prior to being moved onto the unit. This patient was upset and was grieving the loss of their partner during the shift. Ashley went above and beyond to get the patient the assistance that they and their family needed by consulting a variety of support services from chaplain services, a notary, and the unit's social worker. I was highly impressed by her work and her drive to take care of this patient's social and emotional needs, going beyond the medical needs. Overall, Ashely is a nurse who is very dedicated to her work and cares deeply about the patients she takes care of during her shift. I know I and my peers who worked with her have had positive impacts on our learning due to Ashley. We look up and strive to be a nurse like Ashley.
