In his final week, he was moved to Palliative Care. Megan was a great support to his daughter in making this decision, telling her to do what he would want her to do.
My dad was admitted to the hospital. He received wonderful care on 6North but a nurse that stood out above the rest was Megan Fjelstad. She was so kind and compassionate. My dad was moved to palliative care and I was delighted to see Megan in Park Tower. She was so empathetic to our situation. She never did anything to my dad without gently touching him and explaining to him what she was doing. She treated him with so much dignity even though he was near death. She called him by name every time she entered the room. Megan also asked me if I needed anything every time she came in. She was so kind during a very difficult time. Megan deserves to be acknowledged for her kind and caring ways.

The daughter of S reached out to me to share her appreciation and praise for Megan Fjelstad, RN on 6North. Mr. S had been unexpectedly admitted for jaundice and disorientation. Through the course of his stay, he was diagnosed with liver cancer and converted to comfort care before passing. Megan cared for Mr. S on 6N when his diagnosis was made. She had established a relationship with him and was able to comfort him with the news of his condition.
Mr. S was a Purple Heart recipient for his bravery in the Korean War. His daughter reflected on how Megan treated him "like a hero." His daughter talked about how Megan kept her continuously informed, whether she was present or at home, and how much that helped her navigate the last days.
Mr. S lived in an assisted living facility and his daughter had not been able to see her dad in months due to Covid-19. She had been accustomed to visiting often and taking him on outings regularly. She talked about how she almost saw the hospitalizationas a gift because she got to be with her dad in his final days.
In his final week, he was moved to Palliative Care. Megan was a great support to his daughter in making this decision, telling her to do what he would want her to do. His daughter knew that her dad would never want life-prolonging procedures. His daughter hated to leave but Megan assured her that the staff on 4Park was exceptional and would take great care of Mr. S and the family.
Mr. S's eldest daughter came in from Florida along with Mr. S's only grandson who came from North Carolina. His daughter was afraid they would not be allowed to visit given the pandemic. The day they arrived, chance would have it that Megan was pulled to 4Park and asked to care for Mr. S. This was seemingly "meant to be" to his daughter. Megan allowed his three closest family members the entire day to be with him, reminisce, and comfort each other. The family talked with Megan about their loved one's final wishes and began making arrangements. When Megan left that evening at the end of her shift, she said goodbye to Mr. S, knowing she would not see him again. He passed early the next morning. His daughter repeatedly talked about how Megan made a sad time bearable for the entire family and how she never failed to see Mr. S as a human and treat him as such.
