Ally is the definition of a hard-working nurse, constantly going about and beyond her call of duty. She is conscientious of all her patients and their needs whether the patient is able to voice those needs/concerns or not. Ally always advocates for her patients. She demonstrates clinical excellence to her patients and peers through her continuous compassionate care, sensitivity to cultural beliefs and practices, always lending a helping hand being an active listener.
One instance where Ally went above and beyond exemplifying her nursing care practice was with a patient who overdosed in the bathroom. The patient initially arrived at the department ambulatory, alert, and complaining of hand pain from punching a wall. The patient went to the bathroom and was in there longer than expected. Another patient came in during this time, in police custody, that required extra help which Ally provided. Shortly after, Ally checked on her patient in the bathroom, since they had been in there for longer than expected, and the patient said they were okay and almost done.
Ally continued to assist with the patient in police custody but never forgot about her patient in the bathroom who still had not come out. Ally checked on the patient in the bathroom again and receiving no response, called security to help her break into the bathroom. The patient was found slumped over, with shallow breaths, unresponsive, and blue in color. The patient had used heroin and overdosed. Had Ally not been persistent in checking on her patient, who was not considered critical at the time, while also assisting with the other patient, her patient in the bathroom could have died.
Due to Ally's diligence and passionate care the patient's life was saved. Ally is constantly helping her peers and ensuring all patients are cared for appropriately, not just the ones assigned to her. Ally exemplifies all the qualities of a nurse the DAISY Award recognizes.
