Julie was the source of this patient's comfort; remaining at her bedside, holding her hand, and speaking to her with a soothing voice.
It is my privilege and honor to present this wonderful nurse for consideration for the DAISY Award. All good nurses provide care to his/her patients. Yet, it is that exceptional nurse, the one who exudes extraordinary compassion in that care who is recognized with the DAISY Award. Julie Tang is an exceptional nurse. Undoubtedly, the need for compassion is greatest when a patient's health is in the direst of circumstances. She had been caring for a patient whose health has been declining over the course of a few days. One morning, the decline took a drastic turn for the worst. The patient was clearly anxious and yelling out for help. From the moment she started her shift, this nurse was determined to ease the patient's anxiety and provide her with some measure of comfort. Certainly, she had other patients to tend to, but this patient continued to be her primary focus. As the morning went on, it became clear just how essential the compassionate care that she was determined to provide was.
In what would be the patient's last moments of life, I can't imagine how lonely and empty those moments would have been without this nurse. For various reasons, medication was not able to be administered so Julie was the source of this patient's comfort; remaining at her bedside, holding her hand, and speaking to her with a soothing voice. In what is an all too sad and familiar story during this pandemic, the family's concern over being exposed to COVID-19 prompted them to make the difficult decision to not come to the hospital. Hence, this nurse and some others on the staff, stood in proxy, playing music from the era of the patient's younger years, to hopefully provide her with some fond memories and maybe even a bit of joy in her final hours. With a heartfelt prayer, the patient was able to be at peace as she took her rest. In keeping with the patient's Catholic faith, the family desired for her to receive the anointing of the sick prior to her passing. Sadly, with the end becoming imminent, the priest had yet to arrive. This nurse selflessly read a prayer provided to her by pastoral care. A few short moments later, the patient passed, though not alone, as she was holding hands with two other exceptional nurses from the unit.
This is but one example; she is known for her frequent acts of kindness. She is dedicated to her nursing unit as demonstrated through being on the unit council committee, consistently designing and updating sheets for the unit, and providing the new nurses with an organized and exceptional orientation experience. She is a tireless worker; always on the move and never caught sitting. She is simply purposeful about never leaving anything undone at the end of her shifts. She exudes the same care for her coworkers that she does for her patients. She is always collecting for various drives or unit occasions. I have never met a more dedicated nurse. I jokingly refer to her as the mother to everyone on B4. I thought I was doing a great job at having everyone turn things in on time, come to find out she is behind the scenes reminding everyone of due dates and miscellaneous things that need to be done. Taken all together, I cannot come up with any nurse more deserving of the DAISY Award than Julie Tang.
