Kiara was caring for a Covid patient. Her family wasn't able to visit much because her husband had also had a recent stroke. The patient's son called Kiara during a recent shift to let her know that the patient's husband did not survive his stroke. Her husband had died, and the patient's son was going to call and tell her the awful news. Kiara and the patient's son arranged a time so that Kiara could be with the patient when she received the news of her husband's death. Kiara stayed with the patient, holding her hand as she talked to her son and started to cry. Kiara stayed with the patient for at least an hour while she was grieving, holding her hand and talking to her about her husband. Then Kiara wrote a sympathy card for the patient to give to her so she would know she wasn't alone. When I saw Kiara making a card, I retrieved a card from my office and then had the staff all sign it. When I went to give the patient the cards, she said to me that she felt "really cared for, and not just the medical stuff."
