PACU received a patient from the Emergency Department who needed emergent surgery. When he arrived at the PACU from the Emergency Department pre-op, several nurses went to the bed to get him hooked up to the monitors to get him ready for surgery. Sonia Church-Green was one of those nurses.
When Sonia approached the stretcher, the patient immediately grabbed her hand to hold as if it was his lifeline and smiled at her. He asked her if she would stay with him while he was in there. She assured him she would be by his side until he went to surgery. She asked if he had any family with him and he said "no, he was here alone". Sonia then told him "You are never alone. Do you remember the song?" She then started singing the song to him and he smiled and started singing it with her. It was such a touching moment that everyone in the room had tears in their eyes.
