Mr. Kazeem had a very compassionate approach; he accommodated all the family's wishes which build trust in the family. This helped the family to cooperate with Mr. Kazeem in providing end-of-life care to their father.
It is truly a privilege to nominate Mr. Kazeem with the prestigious DAISY Award for his incredible work not only as a nurse in MICU but as a professional who makes a special connection with his patients and family. It has been several occasions where Mr. Kazeem has gone above and beyond one such example when we had a humanitarian patient whose husband was a veteran who came to visit his wife with his son, his son left his father in MICU as he was total care wheelchair-bound. The veteran expressed his need to get his diaper changed as he was dependent on his wife who was the patient admitted. Mr. Kazeem without any hesitation changed his diaper and made the veteran comfortable when his wife who was admitted was thankful and felt at ease as she was his caretaker and now, she had to be admitted to ICU for uncontrolled hypertension. This is the first example of this outpouring of compassion dedication and true support for his patients and their families. He should be recognized for his intuitiveness and outpouring of empathy.
Another example is when Mr. Kazeem volunteered to help as a preceptor for new nurses on his tour of duty. The new nurses have experienced ICU nurses, but they were new to the VA system. Mr. Kazeem remained a permanent charge nurse until his team nurses were acclimated with the system and walked them through the policies and procedures very patiently.
Another example is when Mr. Kazeem had to take care of a patient with newly diagnosed cancer with multisystem failure and was multiple support measure for example on Continuous Veno Venous Hemodialysis. The family was in a state of shock with the new diagnosis was very demanding with every procedure performed for their father. Mr. Kazeem had a very compassionate approach; he accommodated all the family's wishes which build trust in the family. This helped the family to cooperate with Mr. Kazeem in providing end-of-life care to their father. The son who was a firefighter highly commended Mr. Kazeem and felt at ease with the care rendered to his father during the end of life. Mr. Kazeem has shown the ability to cope with the stress that exists in MICU during end-of-life care, shows empathy in all situations and he is above all kind considerate professional, and helpful. He is a nurse that all nurses love to work with and would want to care for ourselves or our own families.
