Both Jamie and myself took care of a patient with COVID-19 who decided to discontinue comprehensive treatment and elected to use comfort measures only. This patient's family lives out-of-state and could not visit before she passed. This patient was sad and disappointed to spend her last days alone and away from family.
On Sunday, when I went to round on this patient, I was surprised to see Ms. Jamie Shortsleeve by the bedside singing with the patient and supporting her in this challenging time. Jamie came in on her day off and elected to forego spending time with her family to support our patient in her last hours on earth. Ms. Shortsleeve's actions have brought tears to my eyes. These actions truly exemplify the values of compassion that IU Health stands for. I feel blessed every day I come to work with such excellent, compassionate, and dedicated team members at IUH.
