The patient was admitted for pneumonia but was having difficulty understanding his diagnosis. Cherry took the time to draw a pair of lungs on his whiteboard and explain viral versus bacterial pneumonia. Additionally, she took extra time to visit the room and make sure the patient was using his incentive spirometer often and correctly. The patient felt more comfortable with Cherry than he had ever felt before in the hospital. The patient stated that he was so thankful to have Cherry take the time to listen to his story and teach him ways to better protect his health. The patient states that it had been years since someone had truly listened to him and shown him such kindness. It made him happy to know he and all the patients at Wise Health System had such a caring and wonderful nurse. At the time I was training and Cherry set a wonderful example for me as a new graduate nurse
