Nick is an excellent student who will be an outstanding nurse and is a deserving recipient of the DAISY Award. He has strengths that are transferable to any healthcare environment.
First, he demonstrates excellent leadership skills: Nick has extensive managerial experience, and he has segued his leadership skills to our brand new COVID-19 testing center, which he helped open on the GWU campus. Nick's leadership expertise was instrumental in our center running smoothly. Our COVID-19 testing center tests over 500 specimens a week, with no errors in sample collection. I strongly believe that due to Nick's hard work and insights, and the ability to work as a team player, we have been successful with this new School of Nursing run initiative.
Second, Nick identifies a problem and develops a plan to address it. At our COVID-19 center, our facilities management team was not using the proper cleaning technique to keep the center clean and safe. Nick and two fellow students identified the issue, met and spoke with management, developed a teaching project to address this critical need, and taught the facilities team how to keep themselves and their families' safe. They developed teaching handouts in both English and Spanish that they distributed to the employees. The employees and the management team were extremely appreciative of this information.
Third, Nick has excellent interprofessional skills. Nick was one of our first students at the GWU flu shot clinic, where all students and employees had to be vaccinated. He worked well with the entire healthcare staff: MDs, RNs, and administrative staff to set up and deliver hundreds of flu vaccines over the course of the first day. The medical director followed up with me after the first day to tell me how Nick was instrumental in getting the clinic off to a good start.
These examples demonstrate the level of engagement, care, and conscientiousness Nick brings to everything he does and why GW Nursing proudly recognizes him for this honor.
