I have precepted many students through the LSU nursing program over the past few years, but Brett was particularly exceptional. Not only was he very knowledgeable for his level of education but it was also his bedside manner that really made him stand out. Brett showed incredible compassion towards all patients that he cared for, but especially patients that were hospitalized with psychiatric conditions.
We as nurses know that this population of patients can at times be the most difficult to care for. Brett never hesitated, he stepped right in and was able to connect with them, comfort them, and provide a safe, calm environment on several occasions. There was one case in particular when we had a young patient that was feeling suicidal. Brett was able to connect with the patient as not just a nurse rendering care but more as a friend that the patient could talk to and connect with. He really went above and beyond to be at the bedside making himself available and offering support. He is a natural. Compassion is not something that can be taught and to me, it is not something that is learned, it is something that comes from within; it is innate.
As a nurse, at times we can get caught up with treating the diagnosis, but Brett treated his patients beyond that with compassion, empathy, and best of all with dignity. It did not go unnoticed by me or his patients. He truly made a difference in the life of not one but many patients. Well done.
