We had a patient who was unable to leave the hospital for over three months due to medical and social issues. The increased length of stay negatively impacted this patient's already compromised cognitive impairments which lead to frequent outbursts requiring medical sedation, weeks of sitter observation, and multiple visits from security.
Breanna Horwood appeared to be the only person that could consistently comfort this patient. She went above and beyond for months. Her efforts included, but were not limited to, gaining access to the rehab gym after hours to bring the patient down and diffuse some energy as well as donating a pair of her own sneakers for the workouts. These efforts resulted in a significant improvement in the patient's mental state, eventually resulting in a safe discharge home. I have never seen this kind of individual effort before. We are lucky to have an RN as compassionate as Bre!
