Heather was so reassuring and explained exactly what would be happening
It is hard for me to be on the patient side of things, rather than the staff and caregiving side, but my experience during a bone marrow biopsy provided a lot of perspective for me.
From my initial appointment, to reviewing my labs, to scheduling the procedure, then having the biopsy and afterwards, I encountered so many kind people. They were all amazing examples of the excellent care we provide at UCHealth, but my IR nurse, Heather Markham, especially stood out.
I almost canceled my procedure the day before because I had been told how painful bone marrow biopsies can be and I was anxious and fearful, but I decided to call Radiology and speak to a Nurse to let them know how I was feeling. I spoke to Heather on the phone and she reassured me that there was a great team scheduled for the next day, that I would be her person that day, and that she would be only a foot away from me through the biopsy. She was true to her word. Heather even rearranged the provider assigned to me for that day so that a physician, rather than a PA, could be there who could give me Fentanyl in addition to Versed so I wouldn't hear the drill or be aware of what was happening.
When it was time to go back to the prep area from the lobby, Heather made sure she was the person to take me back. Heather was so reassuring and explained exactly what would be happening. Heather thought of every detail that might provide me comfort, such as a warm blanket when inserting my IV, and testing a small dose of the Versed before going back for the biopsy, to take the edge off of my anxiety. When I thanked her for her care and concern, she told me about how much she enjoys being a Nurse and that every parent is a priority. I felt so well taken care of and I bet all of her patients feel the same.
Heather, Dr. C, and the whole team told me that they would ensure that I not only make it through the procedure, but that it would be as good of an experience as it could be, and it was. I do not remember any of the bad parts. Before I knew it, Heather was waking me up and telling me the procedure was over. I feel so thankful to each of these people. I received such excellent care and feel so blessed to be part of UCHealth!
These people made such a difference in my life that day, and because of them, I also want to be kinder and strive harder in my own life. It is so many things, big and small, that when put together, make a huge difference. I am so very proud to be part of UCHealth! We truly provide excellent care!
