When I brought my daughter into the Pediatric ER, she hadn't eaten for two days, had lost weight, was breathing heavily, and couldn't really talk. Nurse Kelly Sergio walked right into the room and asked me if I smelled the fruity smell. Nurse Kelly then told the Nurse that was helping her to test my daughter’s blood sugar as she thinks my daughter may have diabetes.
My daughter’s sugar was at 414. If it wasn't for Nurse Kelly having the training she did, and knowing that diabetes could cause the fruity smell, my daughter wouldn't have been diagnosed as quickly as she was. Nurse Kelly was so supportive during this life-changing diagnosis. My daughter was treated with the medicine she needed right away due to Nurse Kelly smelling the fruity smell and knowing to check my daughter’s sugar.
A few months later my daughter fainted and we had to go back to the ER for stitches in her lip. Nurse Kelly was there and as soon as she saw us, she came over to make sure my daughter’s sugar was okay and to see how my daughter was doing.
To this day, I talk about how Nurse Kelly walked into the room, smelled the fruity smell, and knew to check my daughter’s sugar. I will forever be thankful to Nurse Kelly for having the knowledge she did to take care of my baby girl and to help her from being a guessing game as to what is wrong with her. Nurse Kelly was such an Angel that day.
