It was a true gift that Dan was the Nurse providing care for the child
While it is difficult to select a single instance in which Dan Furlong has demonstrated the highest qualities of an Emergency Department Nurse, this observation made by our hospital's chaplain is truly representative of Dan's daily commitment to caring and compassion:

It is by God's grace that Dan was on shift today when a 1-year-old child with burns from a house fire was brought in via air transport. Per the flight crew, the child's mother had to remain behind with another injured child. The 1-year-old child was injured and scared, having to have an IV placed. It was a true gift that Dan was the Nurse providing care for the child in the trauma bay. After the child had been assessed to be stable, the child had to be moved quickly from the trauma bay as the department received emergent notifications for several incoming, critical trauma patients. Dan scooped the child up in his arms and safely transferred him to an open room. Another Nurse had to take pictures of the child's burns, requiring the boy to be turned and positioned. Dan quickly moved into "dad mode" and the role of a care provider. Through providing empathetic care, Dan brought the child comfort and consolation while the necessary care was performed. In Dan's arms, this child went from fear and lack of trust to sudden trust, familiar comfort, and ease. Thank you, Dan!
